Roaring Fork River Fishing Report

When to go and what to know in Colorado

The “Fork” is a legendary freestone fishery that descends nearly 7,000 feet from the heights of Independence Pass to its confluence with the Colorado River. This river is celebrated for its incredible consistency and some of the most prolific insect hatches in the West. Most famous for the Green Drake hatch that begins in early July, the Roaring Fork offers a “Grand Slam” opportunity to catch Brook, Brown, Rainbow, and Cutthroat trout all in the same day. While summer provides epic dry-fly action, the Fork is also a premier winter fishery, where unseasonably large “dirty midges” and early-season BWOs keep the action steady even when the surrounding peaks are covered in snow. From the tight, technical pocket water near Aspen to the expansive drift-boat stretches near Glenwood Springs, the Roaring Fork is a versatile powerhouse.
