Eagle River Fly Fishing Report: February 2019

The Eagle River has opened up a little more with our longer days but the river has a way to go before it is fully open. Not much has changed from our last fly fishing report, trout are still in their winter lies and primarily feeding on midges. Purple, Red, Black and Olive colored midges are a safe bet under and indicator. We have also been throwing a lot of Jig flies in the mix. There is something about those jig patterns that can turn a slow day into a productive one. Be sure to adjust your weight and depth until you find the fish. There has been some midge activity on the surface but not a ton. As we move into March you can expect better dry fly fishing opportunities, until then get used to staring at a bobber.

Colder nights have had the river slushed up pretty good until mid day, it is best to wait until the slush recedes before you begin fishing. Further down valley near Gypsum, CO the water opens up a bit more allowing you more fishing time. We have been getting a lot of snow which is helping bring Colorado out of its drought. This is great news, especially since we have good snow months ahead. We are anticipating a big run off so plan your summer fly fishing trips accordingly. If you can sneak away in April for a few days, consider joining us on the Eagle River. It is some of the best dry fly fishing all year.
